Assisted dying is more than policy – this is personal. I am grateful that almost 1000 constituents took the time to write to me personally in order to help inform my decision and share your stories – I know just how much this vote mattered to so many, and I want to reassure you that I read and continue to read every email I get. Many of these emails have moved me and my team in ways that briefings and papers cannot do, though I attended many professional events at the request of my constituents to bolster these accounts – I will forever be grateful for the volume of correspondence I have received to inform my view on this matter.
As someone who follows this keenly, you’ll know that I voted in favour of Kim Leadbeater’s proposal at the end of November. I did so because I believe something of this gravity requires critical scrutiny in an extended Bill Committee, made up of those from all parties, exploring all sides of the argument, and doing so for several months. I expect this process to result in the full exploration of the concerns that have been raised by many of my constituents in the past few weeks, and to result in amendments to improve the proposed legislation.

I do not yet know how I will vote when this bill returns to the House. Voices from my constituents will continue to guide my hand, and I will continue to communicate with my constituents in Milton Keynes Central around my voting decision once this bill returns to the Commons in a final form.
