Many constituents have reached out to me to express their profound concern about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. I want to provide an update on the current situation and the steps this government is taking in response.
The resumption of violence in Gaza since mid-March has been harrowing to witness. The blockade of vital humanitarian aid, the starvation of children, and the forced separation of families have inflicted unimaginable suffering. Attacks on hospitals, aid workers, and critical infrastructure are entirely unacceptable. These atrocities are not only heart breaking – I will not forget what we have seen.
Moreover, I remain deeply concerned for the Israeli hostages still held and separated from their families, and I fully support ongoing efforts to ensure their safe and swift return.
The recent work of this government has been extremely welcome and essential, and I want to highlight several developments that have been made:
- Suspending trade negotiations on a new free trade agreement with Israel;
- Condemning the extremist rhetoric from the Israeli government around the illegal displacement of Gazans;
- Imposing sanctions on three individuals and four entities linked to the settler movement, building on sanctions against seven entities introduced in October;
- Supporting a joint statement by 27 humanitarian organisations and backing a proposed new model to deliver aid to Gaza.
I welcome this government’s commitment to a two-state solution and an immediate ceasefire – efforts that must include the recognition of a Palestinian state.
