I’m delighted to see real, positive changes for our Armed Forces and their families living in military housing. From this week, families living in Military Housing will be able to keep pets and personalise their homes – a huge step forward in recognising the sacrifices they make for our country. This new scheme, part of Labour’s commitment to improving forces housing, will benefit over 14,700 members of the Armed Forces in the South East.
Until now, the process of owning a pet while serving in the forces has been lengthy and difficult. That changes today. Military families will now be able to keep up to two dogs, cats, or smaller pets without needing permission. I know from personal experience how much joy a pet can bring. The comfort and companionship animals provide is especially valuable for families whose loved ones may be away for months on deployment.
These changes also mean more freedom for forces families to make cosmetic improvements – from painting walls to adding those personal touches that make a house feel like home. For too long, many of our service personnel have been living in substandard housing. Giving them the chance to create a warm, welcoming environment is a simple but powerful way of showing our gratitude.
Our Armed Forces make extraordinary sacrifices to keep us safe. It’s only right that we support them with homes that give comfort, security, and the freedom to live fully.
