Together with my fellow Milton Keynes MPs, Chris Curtis MP and Callum Anderson MP, I’ve written to Health Secretary Wes Streeting seeking an urgent review of the NHS funding allocation for Willen Hospice Milton Keynes.
For decades, Willen Hospice has provided vital end-of-life care, supporting not only patients but their families, carers, and loved ones too – offering bereavement support, young people’s support, and emotional, spiritual and psychological care. Yet only about 12.7% of its operational costs are covered by NHS funding – one of the lowest rates nationally. Meanwhile, hospices in nearby areas receive significantly greater NHS backing.
We’re calling for:
- A full, urgent review of Willen’s funding.
- Assurance that ICBs are required to include palliative care funding in their responsibilities.
- A national framework to ensure hospices everywhere receive fair and equitable NHS funding.
In many places, end-of-life care is paid for by the NHS. Here in Milton Keynes, our incredible hospice depends heavily on the generosity of the community. We simply cannot continue relying on goodwill alone – it simply is not right, or sustainable.
