I recently joined more than 30 of my parliamentary colleagues from across the political spectrum in writing to Ofcom to demand urgent action over a surge in antisemitic posts and calls for violence against Jewish people on X (formerly Twitter).
The research, carried out by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), exposed vile replies to posts by prominent British Jews after the terrorist attack outside a synagogue in Manchester: content celebrating the killings, glorifying genocide, even urging more violence. Such messages – mainstream hatred, incitement, calls for violence – cross into what the Online Safety Act 2023 categorises as “priority illegal content.”
This is not about silencing free speech. It is about protecting lives, dignity and public safety. As an MP, I believe that hate must have no safe harbour online. Under the law, platforms have a legal duty not only to remove harmful, illegal content, but to design their services in a way that prevents such content from appearing at all.
This moment demands clarity and action. Ofcom must act swiftly and decisively and now to hold X to account. Hate must have no refuge online.
