I’m deeply concerned by a new investigation revealing that a Sri Lankan influencer, Geeth Sooriyapura, has built a massive network of over 100 Facebook pages pushing anti-migrant and Islamophobic content here in the UK.
The network includes 128 Facebook pages and groups, with a combined following of around 1.6 million users. Many of the posts are blatant falsehoods – from claims that London council houses are reserved exclusively for Muslims, to AI-generated videos depicting politicians in manipulated settings.
He claims to have earned $300,000 by monetising these pages – even teaching others in his “academy” to do the same. This is not just hateful content – it’s a business model.
That’s why I am calling for tougher online-safety regulation in the UK. We must act to stop the monetisation of hate and ensure our regulatory system prevents people from profiting from division and misinformation.
I will continue pushing for reforms to close these loopholes – because turning bigotry into a business is a danger to both our democracy and our community cohesion.
